Jyothika made her acting debut in the Hindi film 'Doli Saja Ke Rakhna' directed by 'Priyadarshan' in 1998. Her first movie in 'Tamil' was 'Vaali' in 1999. Later that year, she starred in 'Poovellam Kettuppar', in which she played the love interest of the protagonist, paired with her future husband 'Suriya'. The movie 'Kushi' is a successful hit in 2000, it's became a turning point in her career and critics. She got FilmFare award for best actress for this movie.
Jyothika also acted in Telugu films, including 'Tagore' in 2003 and 'Mass' in 2004. She played a negative role in 'Pachaikili Muthucharam' in 2007, an entirely different image portrayed by her. In Chandramukhi she played a woman suffering from a mental illness for which she won another Tamil Nadu State Film Award. Her films in 2006 include 'Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu', a crime-thriller film written and directed by 'Gautham Menon' and 'Sillunu Oru Kaadhal' opposite to 'Suriya'. The former was dubbed into Hindi as The Smart Hunt. In an interview Gautham continues to dream up for Jyotika parts that no one's imagined her in before, and she contributes to the kind of mature romantic angle we’ve rarely seen before.
Her Malayalam films 'Raakilipattu' and 'Seetha Kalyanam' were released in 2007 and 2009 respectively after languishing in development hell for years. Jyothika later made a come back through Television ads. In 2008, she appeared in a short film Herova? Zerova?. The film was written and produced by her father–in–law Sivakumar and also starred Vijay, R. Madhavan and Suriya. Jyothika has endorsed several brands like 'Idhayam oil' and 'Paragon' footwear in the past. She was also the brand ambassador for 'RmKV silk sarees' and a wardrobe hub in Chennai. Later she appeared in ads for 'Aircel' and 'Nescafé' along with Suriya. She also appeared in commercials of 'Comfort' and 'Santoor' Soap.
