Powar started his carrer in 2000. He was selected in 2000 for the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Powar has impressed Indian selectors with consistent performances in domestic cricket since his debut
Powar has played a large role in Mumbai's successful season in the 'Ranji Trophy' in 2002-2003. He was first selected to the Indian squad for their tour of Pakistan. Ramesh did not return to the ODI side again until early 2006. His recall came on the back of 63 domestic wickets for 2005-06. Powar did not look out of place in the international area, playing 'Shoaib Akhtar' with confidence. It was the second season in a row that he had taken over 50 wickets.
In January 2007, Powar was dropped from the squad because of injury and 'Anil Kumble' returned as the second spinner in the lead up to the 2007 Cricket World Cup. In the year 2008 May, Ramesh made his IPL debut for the Kings XI Punjab and picked up a wicket in the very first over he bowled.
